European shoes are recognized worldwide as a distinctive symbol of traditional values combined with high quality products. The best indicator is the number of exports: 10 out of top 15 exporters are European i.e. Italy, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Netherlands, France, Portugal, United Kingdom, Romania, and Slovakia. 

Italy, Portugal and Spain, the main European producers, account for 23% of the global leather footwear exports.

In 2014, the European Footwear Sector was represented by 20.956 companies and 293.583 direct employees with exports to third countries having increased by 40% in quantity and 90% in value from 2009 until 2016.

As regards continental flows, intra-European trade represents one third of the world footwear trade.
