European shoes are recognised worldwide as a distinctive symbol of traditional values combined with high quality products. The best indicator is the value of exports: 9 out of top 15 exporters are European i.e. Italy (3rd), Belgium (4th), Germany (5th), France (7th), Netherlands (8th), Spain (9th), United Kingdom (12th), Portugal (13th), and Poland (15th). 

Italy and Portugal account for 19,2% of global leather footwear exports.

In 2016, the European Footwear Sector was represented by 20.300 companies and 286.651 direct employees with exports to third countries having increased by 40% in quantity and 90% in value from 2009 until 2016.

As regards continental flows, intra-European trade represents one third of the world footwear trade.
